USB Bare Metal Restore: Restoring a Generation 2 Hyper-V VM
Topic
How do I perform a bare metal restore to a Generation 2 Hyper-V virtual machine?
Environment
- Datto ALTO
- Datto SIRIS
- Generation 2 Hyper-V
Description
This article describes the procedure for performing a bare metal restore with a Generation 2 Hyper-V virtual machine.
Procedure
NOTE If you are restoring a Gen 2 Hyper-V VM, a VHDX image export is the recommended restore method. Attempt a VHDX export before doing a bare metal restore. If you are unsure whether you should create a VHD or VHDX Image Export, refer to this Microsoft article (external link) for OS compatibility.
- Go to download.datto.com and download the BMR ISO
- Attach the Datto Utilities ISO to a virtual CD drive containing the desired Generation 2 Hyper-V VM template.
- Create virtual disks for each backed up disk. Datto recommends sizing each virtual disk to be at least 10% greater than its used space.
- Configure the VM to boot from the CD virtual drive that contains the Datto Utilities ISO.
- Boot the VM, then proceed to the Network Configuration section of the USB Bare Metal Restore: Booting the target machine from USB article, and follow all subsequent steps presented.
If the VM fails to boot with Secure Boot enabled:
In VM Settings, select Security, uncheck Enable Secure Boot, then reboot the VM.
